How to look amazing on BOTH good and bad hair days!
Hello curlfriends!
Let’s be real: my hair does not always look perfect. Bad hair days and failed hairstyles can happen to all of us, even us natural hair influencers. And honestly, I can be lazy with my night time routine, which means my styles don’t last as long as they could.
But also, some days your hair looks great, but you want something more. A pop! Sometimes there’s something missing. So, you’re at the right place! I created this list to share some tools and accessories that help me still look bomb on bad hair days or when I’m having a good hair day and just want to add something extra to my hairstyle. In this list, you’ll also see some of my go-to brands and stores for my hair accessories and tools that you can use to make sure you always look stylish and put together!
Hair Ties & Scrunchies
Yes, hair ties, but not just any hair ties! SwirlyCurly! I am a HUGE fan of all things SwirlyCurly Hair Essentials because everything is adjustable to your hair needs and hairstyle. When I was relaxed, I would use the standard ponytail holders all the time. Now that I’m natural, I rarely do. SwirlyCurly is an awesome Black owned, woman owned business that offers snappee hair ties and scrunchies, both of which you can unsnap and snap several together to increase the size. They also offer adjustable headbands and the best bonnet I’ve ever tried, both with several snaps to adjust the size (tighter or looser) to your comfort. Did I mention their products are pain free? No need to worry about getting a headache while using their accessories. Also, they recently started offering satin-silk headscarves, which I haven’t tried yet but am dying to! They look so nice. The products I own are black and brown, but they offer a variety of colors to choose from.
Peep my Instagram video below where I turn my bad hair day into a great one thanks to my SwirlyCurly accessories! The bonnet I remove in the beginning is their Black Velvet with Satin Lining bonnet, which looks so nice and fancy! The only drawback with this bonnet is that the velvet bleeds/transfers very easily: to pillowcases, stuffed animals, paper, etc. Perhaps I just received a bad one. I contacted them about the bleeding, and they were so nice and offered a refund and replacement. (I won this item in a giveaway, so I’ll only be getting a replacement.) They sent me out their All Satin option, which I like as well, but it also bleeds. The all satin option does not bleed as much as the velvet option though. Regardless, I still wear both bonnets.
Hair Steamer
As a type 4, high porosity natural, my kink hair needs some extra TLC sometimes, especially when it’s dry. Adding steam to my hair routine has been a game-changer. Most of the time, I use steam when deep conditioning, but it can also be used to refresh or redo a dry, old style. In the Instagram video above, I used a very unique tool, a handheld hair steamer, called the Q-Redew to refresh my old hair. The Q-Redew is perfect for the natural that wants to postpone wash day and just restyle their hair sometimes. You can also use it for deep conditioning during wash day, but I honestly suggest using a hooded steamer for deep conditioning. Your arms will confirm why I suggest that lol.
Head Wraps & Headbands
When my bad hair day needs to be a secret and hidden from the world, head scarves are my saving grace! I love how versatile they are: so many fabrics, colors, and patterns to choose from. So many different ways to wrap them. You can completely hide your hair or leave some out. The options are endless. Another Black owned, woman owned business I love is The Wrap Life. They offer head wraps, headbands, and turbanettes. Check me out below in one of their black and white wraps! Use this link to save $5 on your next Wrap Life purchase!
Decorative Hair Pins, Clips, & Tubes
When your hair looks great, but needs an extra pop, I love adding decorative hair pins, clips, and barrettes! Your options, brands, and stores are endless for these items. Often, clothing retailers offer them, one being J.Crew. You may not traditionally think to go to a clothing store and purchase hair accessories, but I’ve found some high quality gems at J.Crew! Fun fact: I used to work there! Feel free to check out their latest selection of hair accessories here.
You can also find these items at beauty supply stores, small haircare businesses, and online haircare businesses. Y’all already know that one of my favorite places to shop for anything hair-related is Sally Beauty! I got these cute yet simple gold pins for only $4 from Sally Beauty. A steal right!? Click the image below to shop! You can also find a complete list of their hair accessories here.
I also like to add Filigree Tubes to my twists and braids for an extra pop. These can easily be found at most beauty supply stores, haircare businesses, etc.
I hope you find this list helpful so you still look and feel beautiful EVERY DAY! If any of these brands are new to you, I’m sure you’ll fall in love with them as I did and enjoy what you try out!
xoxo,
Margaret Nicole
