Natural Hair Benefits of Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is a mud-like clay derived from volcanic ash. You will commonly see it being used on face, hair, or body for facials, masks, and more. It’s often sold in powder form, and water and apple cider vinegar are usually added to form the mud-like consistency. As a natural hair influencer, I commonly see it used for hair masks as a detox.

Have you tried using bentonite clay (BC) on your natural hair yet? For the longest, I was afraid to try it. Why? Because I have fine, high porosity, type 4b/4c kinks, meaning, my hair is already super porosis and naturally dry. I was nervous that BC would make my hair even drier. Perhaps to the point a deep conditioner couldn’t rescue the dryness.

Well, I eventually tried a BC, but not the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay that everyone tends to use. I was gifted the Avocurl Clay Cleanser, which has BC along with other great ingredients including slippery elm bark, avocado fruit powder, apple cider vinegar, and hibiscus. I absolutely loved it! As someone that was nervous about BC being too strong for my kinks, the Avocurl Clay Cleanser was a great option for me to ease into clays without using a 100% BC like Aztec Secret.

So why should you even consider using bentonite clay? Let’s get into the benefits!

Hair Benefits of Bentonite Clay

Scalp Health. BC is negatively charged, meaning it can bind to and remove positively charged substances including toxins, metals, and impurities from the skin.

Mineral Rich. BC contains high concentrations of calcium, iron, magnesium, silica, sodium, and potassium. Vitamins and minerals, including iron, can aid in hair growth.

Antimicrobial. This clay kills microorganisms that could be living and growing in your hair and scalp. Microorganisms include bacteria, fungi, and viruses. By getting rid of these microorganisms, you’ll likely experience less dandruff and less itchy scalp.

Cleanse. As you can probably tell from the benefits above, BC gets rid of the bad stuff, removes any product build up, and leaves your hair and scalp clean, detoxed, and refreshed.

All in all, bentonite clay is a great natural option for those that want a switch up from their normal shampoo, but still want dirt, product buildup, and any toxins removed from their hair. If you’re new to BC, I definitely recommend Avocurl’s Clay Cleaner as a gentler BC alternative. Make sure to use my discount code MedBeauty15 to save 15% off any Avocurl.
